August's Mom of the Month - Chris Duncan
09-01-09

Chris DuncanIf Chris Duncan had more time in the day there is nothing she would add to her life. This mother of two and wife of 15 years is passionate about one thing, her family.

Chris and her husband, Mark, have two sons, James and Sam. They spend family time embracing all that Lancaster has to offer. One son's first memory of downtown was going to Central Market to get sandwiches, and then eating them in Steinman Park while watching the fountain.

Working at Lancaster Museum of Art, Chris has found many hidden city treasures.  "There are so many neat places that people just don't know about," she says with a sigh.   There is much to learn from the people of Lancaster County and, said Chris, she wouldn't want to raise her family anywhere else.

What makes Chris and her family unique? Nothing, according to her. But someone walking down the street might think differently. Being in an interracial marriage and having biracial children might make some heads turn, but if they do the Duncans don't notice. "We are who we are," she says with a smile.

Chris laughs when she remembers worrying about questions she expected her older son to ask about their family. She practiced what she would say when the time came. And at age 3½, James wanted to know: "Mommy, why are you pink and Daddy is brown?"

Prepared for the inquiry, Chris went into a long explanation about how he was a perfect blend of pink and brown, which is called biracial.  Young James, confused, looked up and simply said, "Who's Rachel?"

Family:  Husband Mark; children James, 11, and Sam, 8.

Pets:  Brody the dog, age 2; Aly the cat, age 13; and Swimmy the fish, age unknown.

Employment:  For the past five years, I've been doing program funding at the Lancaster Museum of Art.

Advice to parents:  Don't take yourself too seriously. Cut yourself a break.

How I met my husband:  We were both camp counselors at Camp Johnsonburg in New Jersey.  We lost touch for 13 years after we were counselors.  We met again when I went back to the camp.  After that, we decided to start dating.

Favorite family activity:  We all go back to that same camp in Johnsonburg at the end of each summer for a week.  It is the boys' second home.

Favorite family meal:  Aunt Jeanette's Chicken.  My great aunt is 97 years old and loves that her recipe is a family favorite for every birthday and special occasion.

Books on my nightstand:  "Molokai" written by Alan Brennert and "Free Range Parenting" by Lenore Skenazy

Music of choice:  I listen to everything.  My husband and I especially love jazz.  James Taylor and Carly Simon are other favorites.

Favorite television shows:  "Grey's Anatomy" and "The Real Housewives of New Jersey."

Exercise of choice:  The couch and watching my children exercise.

Best shortcut I take:  The kids have an everyday chore chart that they earn an allowance for completing.  Although giving them money for chores is not something I typically promote, the money is allocated for two different things.  Some of the money goes into their savings, and the other goes to people less fortunate.

How I indulge:  Mark and I go out.

What I always tell my kids:  I only have to teach you one thing. That is integrity. Of course, I also tell them I love them.

Toughest part of being a mom:  I'm very hard on myself and what I'm giving my kids.  I need to start to follow my own advice and give myself a break.

Ideal weekend:  Spending time with family and friends while not being cluttered with other responsibilities.  I also love to garden when I have the time.
